Bryant HS Lady Owls to Wrestle for the PSAL Title

The energy in the William Cullen Bryant HS gym in Long Island City on Wednesday evening was contagious as the Lady Owls wrestling team advanced to the PSAL Championship match by defeating Taft HS of the Bronx.

Taft came out strong in the first three rounds, putting the Owls at an early 19-0 deficit. It was Shamil Martinez Clemen, wrestling at 122 pounds, who lit the spark for Bryant. Clemen pinned her opponent allowing Bryant to get on the scoreboard. The change of momentum at this point allowed the Owls to showcase their impressive talent across weight classes.

The Lady Owls won seven out of the next eight matches. Diana Mejia, above, sealed the deal for Bryant wrestling an admirable match against Taft’s Makansira Keita. Mejia took the lead early on in the match executing a pair of takedowns. Keita would not go down easy. The Taft wrestler earned her way back into the match putting Mejia down 14-6. As the second period went underway, the pair battled in a grueling duel. Mejia fought her way back into the match, closing the gap to 14-13 score. With just one second left in the second period Mejia pinned Keita, igniting the spirit of the Bryant squad. The team knew that they had to win one out of the last two matches in order to take the win, Mejia made sure the job got done.

Third-year head coach Joe Goetz shared these words with the team. “Every single one of you [is] responsible for our success. We have accomplished so much this year, and have so much left to do.” The W.C. Bryant Owls will now go up against the number one-seeded Harry S. Truman High School of the Bronx on Wednesday, May 22, for the PSAL championship.
